Get started with Google Analytics

One of the easiest ways to get an indication of how well your website is doing is with Google Analytics. You can very quickly find out how many people visit your website, where your visitors live, what websites are sending you traffic and which pages on your website are the most popular. Plus there are many more statistics that you can dig into. There is really no excuse today for not using Google Analytics. It is free and very easy to get started with.

Getting started with Google Analytics

  1. The first thing you are going to need is a Google Analytics account. Head on over to the link and get your account setup, it is very quick and easy to do. Make sure you are the only one who has access to this account as you will want to have full control over Google Analytics. Don’t let your web designer or digital marketing person create the account for you, the account needs to be under your own name and your own domain name. You can share the account later with people if you need to.
     
  2. Next, you will need to set up a Property for your website and obtain a Tracking ID.
     
  3. The Tracking code will need to be copied into each page of your website that you want to track. Or if you have a master header page, you can install the tracking code there.
     
  4. Once the tracking code has been installed, you will be able to see real-time results immediately.

Google has provided a tutorial that you can follow to complete the setup of Google Analytics.

What about Google Tag Manager?

For even better integration, consider adding Google Tag manager to obtain even more advanced features of Google Analytics. Tag Manager allows you to dynamically add additional tools later without having to adjust your code.
